Customer Success and RevOps: the GTM roles that sustain your revenue

When you think of a SaaS commercial team, you almost always think of who sells. But in a recurring-revenue business, the sale doesn't end at the close: it starts there. Two roles make sure that revenue not only arrives, but holds and grows: Customer Success and RevOps.

They're less “glamorous” profiles than a salesperson closing a big deal, but in a subscription model they're the ones who make the difference between solid growth and a bucket leaking water from the bottom.

What Customer Success (CS) is

The Customer Success team makes sure the customers you've already won achieve the value they expected from the product. It's not reactive support: it's proactive guidance so the customer adopts the tool, uses it well and gets results.

Why does it matter so much? Because in SaaS the business is built on retention and expansion: a customer who renews and also grows (adds more seats, more modules, more volume) is worth far more than a new one. A good CS reduces customer churn and boosts that revenue that expands over time.

When we look for CS profiles, we evaluate empathy, the ability to read the signals of an at-risk customer, a results orientation and the skill to talk both business and product.

What RevOps (Revenue Operations) is

RevOps —revenue operations— is the role that organizes the machinery behind the whole commercial engine. It brings together the processes, data and tools of sales, marketing and Customer Success so they work in a coordinated and predictable way.

In practice, RevOps makes sure the information is reliable, the commercial process is well defined, the tools (CRM and others) are well configured, and leadership can make decisions with real data instead of hunches. It's a role that doesn't sell directly, but that makes everyone who sells perform better.

It's a position that usually arrives a bit later in a company's life, when volume and complexity already call for order. But when it arrives at the right time, the jump in efficiency is enormous.

Why together they sustain revenue

If AEs and SDRs are the ones who bring in revenue, Customer Success and RevOps are the ones who sustain and multiply it. CS cares for and expands the customer base; RevOps makes sure the whole system runs on data, processes and predictability. Without them, a SaaS can sell a lot and still stall, because it loses on one side what it gains on the other.

Build a complete GTM team, not just the spearhead

A commercial team that grows in a healthy way needs both those who close and those who retain and organize. If you want to add Customer Success or RevOps profiles with the right rigor for your stage, let's talk. This article is part of our GTM Recruiting guide
